Building An Automated And Secure Scalable Jitsi Infrastructure For Smart Managed Applications

In today’s distributed work environment, Smart Managed Applications recognized the pressing need to scale their communication platform efficiently without compromising security or functionality. Jitsi, known for its open-source versatility, was an ideal choice; however, deployment complexities and growing feature demands called for a robust, automated approach. Our team was tasked with transforming their infrastructure to support dynamic scaling, user authentication controls, meeting controls, and reliable operation across devices — including Apple platforms.

The Challenge

Smart Managed Applications required a Jitsi deployment that could automatically scale according to user load using Infrastructure-as-Code. Alongside this, they needed stringent security settings ensuring only registered users could initiate meetings, while allowing free attendance for invitees. Meeting links needed to expire once sessions concluded to prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, the platform needed fixes for issues like screen sharing on Apple devices and integration of meeting recording and high-quality voice/video calling functionalities.

Our Approach

We architected a scalable foundation leveraging Terraform scripts to fully automate Jitsi infrastructure deployment with IaC best practices, enabling seamless auto-scaling in response to traffic patterns and cost optimization. We then addressed critical functional requirements and security by:

1. Configuring authentication mechanisms to restrict meeting creation exclusively to verified users while permitting guest attendees without requiring sign-in.
2. Implementing dynamic meeting link expiration protocols to automatically disable access post-session, enhancing platform security.
3. Diagnosing and fixing compatibility issues related to screen sharing within the Jitsi app on Apple devices, ensuring a flawless user experience across all platforms.
4. Integrating recording capabilities directly into meetings to support compliance, training, or archival needs.
5. Setting up reliable voice and video call functionalities optimized for quality and stability across diverse network conditions.

The Result

By deploying a Terraform-driven auto-scaling Jitsi infrastructure combined with refined security controls and feature enhancements, Smart Managed Applications successfully elevated their collaboration platform’s reliability, scalability, and user experience. The solution not only empowered registered users with secure meeting control but also facilitated effortless participation for invitees, all while maintaining a seamless interface across devices including iOS.
